Making the Rolling Stone accessible to the Moss

If you had the opportunity to read this past Sunday's Inquirer, you were either reminded or learned that it is the 25th Anniversary of when the ADA (American with Disabilities Act) became law.  This was of particular interest to me for a number of reasons.  It's always been a concern...people with disabilities, handicapped access, running to open a door for a person in a wheelchair and/or on crutches, or asking whether I could manually assist (roll) a person in a wheelchair, etc.  However, now the tables are turned, and I am temporarily in a wheelchair.

While I'll skip the details of my injury, it has become more apparent to me that there is a shortage of handicapped access, and attention paid to accessibility.  Whether it was reaching over my head for the automatic paper towel dispenser in a public restroom, or not being able to reach the spigot, the worst experience I've had thus far was the wheelchair getting stuck in a pothole, inconveniently situated directly next to the curb cut.  Didn't see it, and, luckily, a knight in shining armor lifted the chair with me in it out of cavity.

Disabled folks need to be able to ambulate, see, hear and have access.  They need to know that the non-disabled are on their side; to be ready to assist whenever possible.  You'll feel better; they'll be better.  It's the right thing to do.

Whistle While You Walk

If you have ever watched someone walking with their arms swinging from side to side, it's hard to imagine that person being depressed.  A depressed person, usually walks slowly, head somewhat downward, and their arms aren't usually swinging.  If you're feeling a little bit "down," try swinging your arms and pick up your speed. You'll feel better AND you'll be getting some exercise too.
