Did you ever sit next to someone that was incessantly cracking gum? Manners aside, gum chewing calms your brain. Maybe it's the repetitive motion of the chewing or the increase of salivation and subsequent swallowing, gum chewing increases blood flow to the brain, which, in turn, provides a sense of calm. I find that it also curbs your appetite for a period of time, and, attention cigarette-smokers, pop a stick of sugarless gum in your mouth instead of a cigarette. Stick of gum vs. a cigarette, hmmm. Maybe that's why it's nicknamed a Cancer Stick (to give you the suggestion of chewing gum instead of reaching for a cigarette?)
