Couples, partners, friends, acquaintances ~ all benefit by touch. We thrive by being touched. We are soothed by touch. And we feel a bond with the person who is providing it. There are many, many benefits gained by touching and being touched. Research has shown that even the immune system benefits by it (the thymus gland becomes stimulated and balances the body's production of white blood cells, maintaining this balance of white blood cells is important in keeping you healthy). Obviously, there all kinds of touching and at all times, I'm referring to the appropriate kind. What is appropriate for one person may not be well-received by someone else. Always consider the relationship and the reason behind it. A good-natured pat-on-the-back usually goes a long way to demonstrate support and consideration. Touching affectionately, it is shown, reduces stress, as it has been determined to release the hormone, oxytocin (not to be confused with oxycontin). Want to release stress in your partner? Touch him or her on their shoulder or back, their hand, or their face and observe the difference. They will be less stressed, and so will you, for having done it.
